How to never miss a business license or permit renewal

To avoid missing a business license or permit renewal, list every license your business holds with its issuing agency and expiration date, set calendar reminders well before each deadline, and watch for fee or requirement changes from each agency. An alert service such as PolyWise can flag changes to the rules.

Make a complete list

Most small businesses hold more licenses than owners remember: a general business license from the city or county, a state sales tax permit, health or food service permits, signage permits, fire inspections, and professional or trade licenses for you or your employees. Each one may renew on a different cycle.

For each, note the issuing agency, the license number, the expiration date, and how renewal works.

Watch for changes, not just dates

Renewal deadlines are only part of the risk. Agencies also change fees, add continuing education requirements, or move renewals online. These changes are usually announced in board meeting minutes or agency notices that owners rarely see.

Build a reminder system

  • Put each expiration date on a shared calendar with a reminder a couple of months ahead.
  • Keep copies of every license and renewal confirmation in one folder.
  • Sign up for email notices from each licensing agency that offers them.

Let PolyWise watch the agencies

PolyWise watches for license and permit rule changes for your industry and location, and alerts you in plain language.
